Sizzling Summer Technology Series

The Distance Education Division is excited to unveil a new professional development opportunity, appropriately titled “Sizzling Summer Technology Series”. The host of trainings and workshops will focus on general technology related content that will promote the use of technology, whether you teach online or just enjoy surfing the Internet. Additionally, these workshops are available not only to you, our faculty and staff here at Mercy College, but we have decided to open this opportunity to your family members as well, at no cost! Spouses and Children (ages 12 & up, sessions marked as Kid Friendly) can take advantage of this great opportunity. Please make sure to register for the workshops, as space is limited.

Creating Online Slide Shows Using Smilebox Part 1

Tuesday July 10th, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Are you tired of taking pictures that no one ever sees!? Would you like to share your images with family and friends in the form of greeting cards, photo albums, and invitations? If so, Smilebox is your answer. Come out and learn about how Smilebox can take your pictures and design professional creations with music and other effects.

Creating Online Slide Shows Using Smilebox Part 2 – Creation Time!

Wednesday July 11th, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Participants will create a greeting card, photo album, or invitation using Smilebox. Once the design is finished the creation can be shared via email or linked to a web page. Preparation: Bring a flash drive with some pictures you’d like to use or have access to the pictures online.

Summer Fun Learning Sites – Reading, Writing and Math K-8

Thursday July 12th, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

School is out but learning never stops! There are many fun learning sites on the Internet that can keep your children sharp in the content areas of Reading, Writing, and Math. This session will feature websites that promote learning in the form of games, video and other interactive content.

Have you ever wanted to design something with visual appeal and a unique style? Microsoft Publisher is your design answer! This application is filled with hundreds of templates that can be customized to your taste. Create business cards, birthday party invitations, newsletters and much more!

Using Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word

Wednesday July 18th, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Hyperlinks help us get from one place to another in the computer world and you can also insert this feature in Word. Come to this session to learn about using hyperlinks for graphics, external sites, other documents and even specific places within your Word document. You don’t want to miss this one!

Excel: Functions, Charts, and File Protection

Thursday July 19th, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Are you interested in developing your skills when it comes to Microsoft Excel? This workshop will focus on using built-in functions for calculations and inserting various charts into your worksheet. Learn how to protect and document your file after it’s created by using utilities that protect your work from unwanted changes.

Are you still saving your most visited websites in your “Favorites” folder on the computer!? Tired of not being able to access them unless you’re at work or home? Come to this workshop and learn about social bookmarking and accessing your favorite websites from any computer. Participants will also learn how to expand their personal learning networks by way of social bookmarking.

Most kids today have Internet experience and are on some form of social media platform. As parents there are tips, tools, and techniques on how to monitor our children’s activities and ensure their safety online. This session will expose parents to a website geared toward cyber safety and online etiquette for children.

Kids today are interacting over the Internet and may not be aware of the dangers that accompany this medium. This session will teach them how to safeguard their identity and be more aware of using the Internet and engaging with others. This session will also provide participants with a list of free “kid-friendly” social media sites.

Google Voice is a free service that allows you to create one phone number for multiple devices and locations. Use Google Voice to simplify the way you use email, customize your callers’ experience, and more. For example, you can create a custom number for students, friends or for your organization and have it connected to one device! Come out and learn more!

Google Calendar

Wednesday August 1st, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

In today’s times we are all swamped with appointments, events, and tasks. Google Calendar is a free online calendar that can be shared with and edited by anyone you choose! This calendar is user friendly and easy to set up. This tool can be used to send reminders to friends, indicate availability and track RSVP’s for scheduled events. Interested? Sign up today!

Google Talk

Thursday August 2nd, 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.

Google Talk is a free chat or instant messaging (IM) service that’s offered with the Google platform. It’s software that can be added to any computing or mobile device. This tool goes beyond normal chat and IM capabilities, but also taps into file transfer and interacts with Gmail. Use Google Talk to hold a conference call for your book club or call a family member out of town! The possibilities are endless!
