Free Eye Exams Offered by Mercy College in Association with Prevent Blindness

Kathryn Bubrig

The Mercy College Ophthalmic Technology Program hosted free, comprehensive professional eye exams on November 24, 2015. The evening clinic was organized by Michelle Lee, COA, Adjunct Lab Instructor, and Shayna Knack, Prevent Blindness NW OH Chapter Manager, to help fulfill the need for vision screenings in the area. Some individuals receiving exams were scheduled in coordination with the Toledo Public Schools Head Start Program.

The annual clinic took place on the Mercy College Toledo campus in the Ophthalmic Lab. Ms. Knack was assisted at the registration desk by Donna Campbell, COMT, OSA, Ophthalmic Technology Program Lead. Mercy College Ophthalmic Technology students performed patient history-taking and vision assessments, and assisted a licensed Optometrist during the examinations. Program faculty supervising the students were Ms. Lee and Crystal Stanfa, COT, Lab Assistant. Tia Tucker, OD, (Eye Institute of Northwestern Ohio) once again generously donated her time to assess patients and prescribe the appropriate vision correction prescription.

Eligible patients requiring a prescription were presented with a Prevent Blindness eyeglass voucher immediately following their exam. Vouchers are redeemable for new frames and lenses at local optical shops within the next month.
