Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. This year, Mercy College of Ohio is raising funds for the Student Emergency Fund, a fund that assists students with unforeseen financial emergencies which would prevent them from continuing their education at Mercy College. The fund is sustained by contributions from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the College.

The Student Emergency Fund is available to degree-seeking and credit-bearing certificate students (online and land-based). The Fund Team considers each request and determines whether the student assistance funds can be used for the circumstance. Decisions are made as soon as possible depending on the urgency of the situation. The number of students who can be served by the Student Emergency Fund is determined by the availability of funds. A maximum of two (2) awards can be made to an individual student during their enrollment at Mercy College of Ohio. Typically, awards are limited to $200 so as not to exhaust the fund too quickly and given to students by making a payment directly to the need (e.g. utility company, landlord, etc.). If this is not possible, funds can be disbursed in the form of a gift card.

Those with questions about Giving Tuesday should contact the Mercy College of Ohio Alumni Department at 419-251-8993 or alumni@mercycollege.edu

Current Student Spotlight: Nancy Camp

Nancy Camp is a student in the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Program at Mercy College’s Youngstown, OH location. She is anticipating graduation in December 2021. Nancy became interested in Mercy College after hearing about our Evening and Weekend nursing program and about the clinical experiences that we offer to students.

Nancy has been working as an LPN for the past 25 years. In her position, she is responsible for immunization records, vision/hearing screenings, and first aid. Additionally, Nancy serves the elementary/middle school she is employed at by administering a food pantry, coat drive, and giving tree. She works with an eyeglass program and with the Mercy Health mobile dental van (SmileStation) to ensure that her students maintain proper hygiene and health. Nancy shares that she hopes to make an impact in each of her student’s lives. She has wanted to become a Registered Nurse (RN) her entire life. With the Evening and Weekend program, as well as the scholarships that she received from Mercy College, she is one year away from accomplishing this dream.

Nancy shares “the cost of continuing my education was a big concern of mine. I received two Mercy College institutional scholarships that helped to relieve some of this concern and allow me to focus on my education. My experience at Mercy College has been wonderful. The instructors make sure we are given everything we need to survive and succeed as an RN. I have tutoring sessions every week with Somia (Youngstown Nursing tutor), to make sure I am staying on top of all of my coursework. Mercy College has helped me so much. The tutors and professors go out of their way to help in whatever way possible.”

Students like Nancy have a dream to do better and accomplish a goal. Without the help of scholarships, that dream cannot be accomplished for many of these students due to financial barriers.
