Mercy College of Ohio’s Ophthalmic Technology Program now offered in the Cincinnati Area
Mercy College of Ohio's Ophthalmic Technology Credit Certificate Program will be expanding its footprint by offering the program’s laboratory course and clinical placement in the Cincinnati area this fall.
Mercy College will be partnering with Cincinnati Eye Institute (CEI) to provide clinical placements in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The size, volume, and scope of CEI provides excellent facilities for students to learn in as CEI is one of the largest private ophthalmology practices in the country. CEI will host both the laboratory course and clinical placement.
“Cincinnati Eye Institute is proud to be a clinical host site for Mercy College’s Ophthalmic Technology Program. There are numerous employment opportunities locally and regionally for new ophthalmic assistants and technicians, especially for those who are formally trained and certified in this accredited program,” said Amy Jost, Cincinnati Eye Institute Clinical Research and Education Liaison.
Ophthalmic medical personnel are highly skilled professionals who work under the direction of a licensed ophthalmologist. They assist ophthalmologists by performing clinical functions and may administer eye tests, instill eye medications, and otherwise assist patients with their eye care. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of ophthalmic medical personnel is expected to grow much faster than average (14% or higher) from 2014 to 2024, with projected job openings of 12,800.” The Bureau also reports median wages (2015) of $16.99 hourly or $35,350 annually. Locally ophthalmic technologists make between $15 and $16 an hour with opportunities for advancement.
Donna Campbell, COMT, program lead for the Ophthalmic Technology Program at Mercy College states, “The two semester program is a fantastic opportunity for students to receive preparation in an area where there is a great need. The program’s lecture courses are online to provide flexibility for individuals who want a fast entry into an exciting healthcare career. Those who enjoy helping others and learning new skills would make a wonderful ophthalmic technician. Employment is typically weekdays during regular office hours often with employee benefits.”
