Joely Austin

Dr. Joely Austin is an assistant professor of nursing at Mercy College of Ohio and a registered nurse with specialty certifications in obstetrical and neonatal nursing. Dr. Austin received her associate degree in nursing from the College of Southern Nevada and a Masters of Science in Nursing from Lourdes University and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Northern Kentucky University. Her area of clinical expertise is maternal child and medical-surgical nursing. She is a member of the Association of Women’s Health Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing, National League of Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau. Her research interest is in perinatal education and the impact of interprofessional simulation. Dr. Austin also volunteers her expertise as a nurse every summer for the Lucas County 4-H club as their camp nurse.

Dr. Tamam Baiz is an Associate Professor at Mercy College of Ohio and joined the faculty in fall 2010. Dr. Baiz holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, a Master of Science in Chemistry, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toledo. Stephanie Baughman

Stephanie Baughman has been a Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) since 2012 with experience as a critical care nurse, clinical instructor, and intensive care unit educator. Ms Baughman is an Assistant Professor for the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program at Mercy College of Ohio in Youngstown, where she has worked since 2016. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Akron and later obtained her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in nursing education from Capella University. Sharon Bee is a Licensed Registered Nurse that has experienced many facets of nursing through over four decades as an RN. Sharon has been an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo for over 10 years. Ms. Bee holds a Diploma in Nursing from Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toledo, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Lourdes University. Her areas of experience include Pediatric Nursing, Nursing Informatics, and Fundamentals of Nursing. She worked in Pediatric Nursing at the beginning of her career and it continues to be her passion. James Bier

Dr. Jim Bier is an Associate Professor in the Arts & Sciences Division of Mercy College of Ohio. He teaches microbiology every semester to nursing and allied health students, ecology and genetics to upper-class biology majors, a full year biology course for first-year biology majors, and biology for non-science majors. In the past, he has also taught a course on the science in science fiction. He was born and raised in Toledo, spent fourteen years away while attending Xavier University for his B.S, Indiana University for his Ph.D. in biology, and Michigan State University as a postdoctoral associate at the Center for Microbial Ecology. He returned to Toledo to teach at Mercy College in 1998. During his graduate and postdoctoral years, Dr. Bier studied the ecology and evolution of symbioses, such as fungi that live inside of plants, viruses that live inside of fungi, and plasmids that inhabit bacteria. At Mercy College, his most recent research has examined the effects of low-stakes testing on student performance. His interests outside of work include visiting natural areas, doing crossword and sudoku puzzles, playing games with his three children and wife, gardening, and converting a portion of his backyard into a wildlife habitat. Dr. Bier’s parents immigrated from northeastern Italy, and he grew up speaking Friulan, an Italian dialect, with his family and English with his friends.

Carol Campbell

Carol A. Campbell is a Registered Nurse with 40 years of experience in the healthcare field, working in the academic setting since 2010. Ms. Campbell is the Program Director and Assistant Professor in the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Programs on the Toledo and Youngstown Campuses at Mercy College of Ohio. She holds an associate degree in Nursing from Owens Technical College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Lourdes College. Sung-David Chun

Dr. Sung David Chun is a professor of sociology at Mercy College of Ohio. He joined Mercy College in 2006, having previously taught at the University of Notre Dame and at Bethel College. He was also a research scientist at the Institute of Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He studied English as an undergraduate at Korea University and earned a MA in Korean Society from the Academy of Korean Studies and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. In addition to this extensive teaching experience, he has published numerous articles on Asian-American and Latino issues. He is particularly interested in the ways that culture and religion intersect with other forces of marginalization to influence Latinos’ financial and health behaviors. He currently has two research projects: Latino migrant farm workers and the social mobility of healthcare professionals. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Welfare and Human Rights since 2014.

Dr. Lorraine Coalmer is a Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and an advanced practice nurse (APRN) in Ohio. Jennifer Cruz

Professor Jennifer Cruz, MSPAS, PA-C is one of the principal faculty of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Professor Cruz holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in healthcare studies and a minor in biology and an MS in physician assistant studies from Daemen College in Amherst, NY. She joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2020 after over a decade of full-time practice as a Physician Assistant. She enjoys helping students grow into practicing clinicians and promoting patient advocacy. Her work as a practicing PA focused on Hematology/Oncology patients from acute care in the hospital setting, outpatient care during active treatment, and then aiding patient’s transition into survivorship. Her professional career includes employment at several institutions including the renowned Moffitt Cancer Center. She is an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Ohio Association of Physician Assistants, Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology as well as the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology. In her free time, Professor Cruz enjoys fun activities with her husband and children. Hobbies include baking, crafting, musical theatre, and enjoying the outdoors with her two young boys and equally rambunctious dogs.

Dr. Lori Doll-Speck is a Licensed Registered Nurse with over forty years of experience in nursing practice and academic settings.  She began her nursing education career at Mercy College of Ohio in 1995, where she currently is an associate professor, teaching both in the land-based and online environments in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Ohio (now the University of Toledo), and a PhD in Higher Education and Administration from Bowling Green State University. Her areas of clinical expertise are maternal/newborn, neonatal intensive care, home health, and pediatric nursing. In addition, Dr. Doll-Speck is certified by the National League for Nursing as a Certified Nurse Educator. Her dissertation is entitled: Study Behavior of Nursing Students. Dr. Doll-Speck has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing, Zeta Theta Chapter, since 1990, and has been chairperson of the Financial Committee since 2012. Neeli Engelhart

Neeli Axler Engelhart, MMS, PA-C, is a Principal Faculty member of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Neeli holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master in Medical Sciences in Physician Assistant Studies from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. Neeli started her work in academia in 2002 and has worked in PA and nursing education at Midwestern University, Northwestern University, and the Jerusalem College of Technology before joining the faculty at Mercy College of Ohio. Neeli’s clinical career has been in general surgery and adolescent medicine and focused not only on the treatment of patients but on patient education, a passion of Neeli’s, that complements her teaching style and her interest in PA education. In 2014, Neeli, her husband, and four sons relocated to Israel. Since the international move, Neeli has been involved in trying to bring Physician Assistant education to Israel. Neeli has been teaching in nursing programs and has recently taken an active role in facilitating dynamic ways to teach through distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dana Eskins

Dana Eskins is a registered radiologic technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), certified in Radiography and Computed Tomography. She is also a registered sonographer with the ARDMS, certified in abdomen (ABD) and obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). She has three decades of experience in medical imaging and academic settings. Ms. Eskins joined Mercy College in 2018 as the Program Director/Assistant Professor of the Radiologic Technology Program. She holds a BS degree in Advanced Radiography from Weber State University, an M.Ed. in curriculum and teaching from Bowling Green State University, and is currently completing a doctoral program in the Leadership Studies from Bowling Green State University. Her area of professional expertise focuses on teaching and learning strategies in healthcare education. Christopher Gibbons

Chris Gibbons is a registered radiographer with advanced certification in computed tomography. Mr. Gibbons is also a certified healthcare financial professional and has executive experience in banking, finance, insurance, and securities. Previous experience also includes licenses in life and health, property and casualty, and as a registered securities representative. Mr. Gibbons holds a Certificate in Computed Tomography from Owens Community College, an Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology from Mercy College of Ohio, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Findlay, and is currently attending Northcentral University for a Doctorate in Business Administration. Tara Jenner-Donaldson

Tara Jenner-Donaldson, DMH joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2021 as the Clinical Coordinator for the Physician Assistant Studies Program. Dr. Jenner-Donaldson completed her master’s and a doctorate in medical humanities at Drew University and received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from The Ohio State University. Prior to starting at Mercy, Dr. Jenner-Donaldson worked in various capacities in higher education, medical education, and private medical practices, including as an assistant course director for a doctoring course for first- and second-year medical students, assistant professor, and elective director. Dr. Jenner-Donaldson’s academic highlights include developing a medical narrative elective for second-year medical students, presenting about the experience of infertility, and working to implement the health humanities in health professions education. Amy Jost is a certified ophthalmic medical technologist, certified clinical research coordinator, and corporate trainer certified. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology in various clinical, surgical, and leadership roles. Ms. Jost is the Program Lead for the Ophthalmic Assistant Program and also has also worked full-time at Cincinnati Eye Institute, currently as the manager for the Clinical Research and Education Department. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Science from Purdue University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Medical Education through the University of Cincinnati. She is a Past President of the Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology and serves on the Education Committee for the Ohio Ophthalmological Society and the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. She published a book, titled, Train the Trainer, Ophthalmic Training Strategies that Work, and is Lead Faculty on a live presentation by the same name. Deborah Karns

Dr. Karns has been a nurse and nurse educator for over 40 years. She earned her Nursing Diploma from St. Vincent School of Nursing, her BSN from Lourdes College (now University), her MSN as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Parent-Child Health from Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo Medical Center), and her PhD in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Throughout her career, she has worked in pediatric nursing on both the general pediatric unit, and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as a bedside nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, and in the Pediatric Trauma Coordinator role. Two of her major accomplishments while working at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center were leading the development of a Child Maltreatment Prevention Team and attaining Level I Trauma Center Verification for Adult and Pediatric care. Currently, Dr. Karns is a full-time faculty member and the Director of the MSN Program at Mercy College of Ohio. She has led the efforts to finalize the development and CCNE accreditation of the MSN Program Leadership and Education Tracks. Her research focus has been on the effects of pet therapy in the college setting, and meaningful learning development in student nurses, the traditional care plan versus the concept-based care plan approach.

Susan Klarr

Susan Klarr, an Associate Professor, has taught Human Anatomy and Physiology at Mercy College of Ohio since 2006 and at the college level for 30 years. She enjoys all students but especially appreciates the more mature learners who populate her evening classes because they “get my jokes”. Earning both her Bachelor’s and Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit, she considers herself a “professional commuter” who has logged nearly 1,000,000 miles and 200 recorded books in her career. She considers herself lucky to have a job where she gets to talk about poop all day and make learning enjoyable for stressed-out healthcare-oriented students. An avid traveler, she has visited three of the seven wonders of the modern world. When not globe-trotting she divides her time between lake-fun (she is a SUP enthusiast), running 5K’s and baking a lot of cookies. Dr. Klarr lives by the mantra that everything is a "Quest for Fun".

Dawn LaBarbera

Professor Dawn LaBarbera joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2018 as the founding Program Director of the developing PA Program. Dr. LaBarbera holds a bachelor’s degree from Ripon College; MS in physician assistant studies from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Sciences (Finch University); and PhD in Organization and Management from Capella University. As an educator for over two decades, LaBarbera spent over half of that time as a Program Director in which she skillfully led successful accreditation of two different PA programs in the Midwest. She also practices clinically as a primary care PA. Highlights of her academic career include founding the Fort Wayne Area Interprofessional Education Consortium (FWAIPEC), a successful interprofessional education collaboration of graduate health care programs from different teaching institutions; mentoring over 100 master’s research projects and authoring numerous publications and presentations to contribute to the body of PA research. Jennifer Lyons has been a full-time faculty in the Nursing Division at Mercy College of Ohio since the fall of 2018. She has over two decades of nursing experience since obtaining her Bachelor of Science of Nursing degree from Lourdes University in 1999. Quentin T. Moore is the Program Director of Imaging Sciences, B.S. Medical Imaging Program Director, and an Assistant Professor. Dr. Moore has been teaching at Mercy College of Ohio since 2010. He holds an Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology from Mercy College, a Bachelor of Health Science from Washburn University, a Master of Public Health from Bowling Green State University & the University of Toledo, and a PhD in Health Science from Northern Illinois University. Dr. Leisa Morrison is a professor at Mercy College where she has been teaching since the spring of 2006. Dr. Morrison holds both a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Biology Education from Alcorn State University and a PhD in Physiology from Kent State University. Her area of expertise and research in graduate school focused on endocrine and reproductive physiology. Vivian Moynihan, MD, MPH, FACOG is the Medical Director of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Dr. Moynihan holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton with a major in biology; a Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University; and a master’s degree in public health from St. Louis University. She is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and maintains annual certification by The American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Padmaja Nandigama

Dr. Padmaja Nandigama has over 15 years of college-level psychology teaching experience. She earned her Masters and Ph.D in Psychology from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI with a major in Bio-Psychology and cognitive neuroscience. She also has a master's in Life Sciences from the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India. Apart from being a faculty, Dr. Nandigama is also a Life Coach and a Motivational Speaker. She has conducted various seminars and workshops for executives and professionals. She has authored a book called “Building Balanced Relationships” which focuses on topics like emotional intelligence, professional presence, self-esteem and communication skills, Positive-Living, and Stress Management. Her research interests include studying maternal-adolescent bonding, academic achievement, and stress management in south Asian population. Emily Niedzwiecki

Emily Niedzwiecki, Assistant Professor, is a Licensed Registered Nurse of 20 years, more than 10 of which are in nursing education. Professor Niedzwiecki teaches for the BSN pre-licensure program and has been employed by Mercy College of Ohio since 2011. She previously taught for an LPN program and ASN program in the Toledo area. Professor Niedzwiecki earned her Associate of Science in Nursing in 2000 from Owens Community College, her BSN in 2008 from the University of Toledo, and her MSN in 2011 from the University of Phoenix. She is currently enrolled in the Higher Education Administration PhD program at Bowling Green State University. Professor Niedzwiecki also earned a Nurse Paralegal Certificate from the University of Toledo in 2003 and has experience working on medical malpractice, medical products liability, and personal injury cases for a local law firm. Professor Niedzwiecki’s area of nursing expertise is in Emergency Nursing and she is a member of Sigma Theta Tau. She is an avid distance runner and is a marathon training coach for Dave’s Running Shop where she is also a member of the Dave’s Racing Team.

Ken Ryalls, PhD, is the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at Mercy College of Ohio. He has been in almost every role in academic affairs, serving as a faculty member, program director, department chair, division chair, dean and VPAA at two different colleges. After his previous position as VPAA he was offered the presidency at The IDEA Center, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to the improvement of teaching and learning in higher education. In that role, Dr. Ryalls became nationally recognized as an expert in the fair utilization of student feedback in faculty evaluation and improvement of faculty performance. After 8 years of leading IDEA, Dr. Ryalls felt a longing to return to academia, where his efforts to further education have a more direct impact. Lisa Stevens is an Assistant Professor at Mercy College.  She has worked in the Mercy Health system for two decades, and at Mercy College since 2015.  Ms. Stevens has been a nurse for over 20 years and has worked in many areas such as step-down, progressive care, medical-surgical, cardiac, and renal.  While at Mercy College, she has worked in the Student Success Center as a nursing tutor and is currently a nursing instructor in the BSN pre-licensure program. Lisa completed an ASN-degree in 1997 from Lutheran College in Ft. Tami Steveson

Dr. Tami C. Steveson, an Associate Professor in Science at Mercy College of Ohio since 2014, has over three decades of experience teaching biology and related science subjects at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Steveson is originally from Littleton, CO, a graduate of Columbine High School, who earned her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Sciences at the University of Denver. While earning her Ph.D., Dr. Steveson acted as an INSERM foreign research exchange scientist in Rouen, France. Dr. Steveson then completed a five-year, NIH funded post-doctoral fellowship in Baltimore, MD, performing research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, before undertaking an NIH funded Instructorship at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Steveson was an Assistant Professor at BGSU in the Biology Department running her own research laboratory, in which she trained several undergraduate and graduate students in research, before joining Mercy College. Dr. Steveson’s research involves understanding the effects of endocrine disruptors in neuropeptide processing and trafficking in neuroendocrine cells.

Barbara Stoos

Dr. Barbara Stoos is the Dean of Arts and Sciences, Program Chair for the Pre-Professional Biology Programs, and Professor of Physiology at Mercy College of Ohio. Dr. Stoos earned her PhD in Physiology (specific areas of study: Cardiovascular and Renal physiology) from the Medical College of Ohio. She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Hypertension and Vascular Research in the Department of Internal Medicine, Henry Ford Health Center, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Stoos continued at this institution as an Associate Staff Scientist for five years before joining Mercy College. Historical research interests included the effects of Nitric Oxide on renal epithelial transport, development, and characterization of a tissue cell line, and the quantitative contribution of systemic vascular autoregulation in hypertension. Current interests include curricular development and Interprofessional Education. Dr. Stoos has presented at many National Science conferences and published a variety of scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. Her greatest passion is working with the students at Mercy College.

Dr. Treasure Sucheck is a chemistry professor with over thirty years of experience teaching chemistry and biochemistry. Dr. Sucheck is the Chair of the Chemistry Department and Professor at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo. He is the Manager of PSG Operations of St Charles, and St Anne sleep centers in Toledo, Ohio. He has been working in the field of sleep since 1992. Thomas J. Voyles is a Licensed Registered Nurse with more than three decades of experience in the hospital and academic setting. Dr. Kimberly Watson serves as the Dean, Division of Health Sciences, Program Director, MHA Program, and holds the rank of Professor.  She has over 30 years of combined healthcare leadership and higher education experiences. She has worked for Mercy Health since 1989, and with Mercy College of Ohio since 1997.  She began her educational journey with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Record Administration from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and is certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).  She worked in acute care hospital settings prior to starting the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Mercy College. She continued her education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tiffin University, and a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Leadership Studies with a cognate in Higher Education Administration from BGSU. Lori Yarger

Lori Yarger MSN, RN is a Licensed Registered Nurse with three decades of experience in healthcare. She has worked in the academic setting since 2011. Mrs. Yarger is currently an Assistant Professor at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo. She holds an associate degree in Nursing from Owens Technical College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Spring Arbor University, and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Her area of expertise is medical-surgical and orthopedic nursing as well as community health nursing. Mrs. Yarger currently serves as Chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee as well as the Mercy College representative for Mobile Meals of Toledo. Mrs. Yarger has been an active member of Zeta Theta Tao International, Chapter-At-Large since 2013.

Meridith Yochim , MSPAS, PA-C : Assistant Professor, PA Program

Meridith Yochim

Meridith Yochim, MSPAS, PA-C is one of the principal faculty of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Professor Yochim holds a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. She majored in Chemistry and Physical Education while working as a student athletic trainer. She received a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After graduating from University of Saint Francis, Professor Yochim gained experience in Family Medicine and Pediatrics. For over a decade, she has worked in PA education at her alma mater, University of Saint Francis, and Trine University. Professor Yochim joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2021. She enjoys mentoring students and fostering their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and she continues to practice clinically for Dekalb United Central Schools Employee Wellness Clinic in Auburn, Indiana. In her free time, Professor Yochim enjoys spending family time with her husband and their 4 boys. She enjoys photography, crafting, sports (Go Colts!), and spending time outdoors.

Julie Young

Julie Young is a Licensed Registered Nurse with two decades of experience in healthcare practice. She is an Assistant Professor in the Nursing Program, the Program Lead and faculty member for the Community Health Worker Program (CHW), at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo. Ms. Young joined Mercy College in the CHW program in January of 2015 and the Nursing Program in August of 2018. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toledo, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University. Her area of clinical expertise progressive care and caring for victims of sexual assault.

Gina Youngs

Gina Youngs is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nursing and has worked at Mercy College of Ohio since 2018. Ms. Youngs has received a Certificate in Health Technologies in Practical Nursing from Owens Community College, an Associate of Science in Nursing degree from Owens Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with High Distinction degree from Ohio Northern University, and a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Purdue Global University, formerly Kaplan University. Ms. Youngs achieved an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from Ohio Northern University and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International in 2015. Ms. Youngs has over 15 years of experience as a nurse and has worked in academics since 2015. Ms. Youngs has excelled in a variety of nursing settings and her specialty areas of practice include Cardiology, Infection Prevention, Wound Care, and Community Health. Those who know her well would confirm her passions for the History of Nursing, Nursing Theory & Best Practices in Nursing. Ms. Youngs is pursuing a PhD in Nursing with a research focus in multiple sclerosis and nursing care.
